In a fire event, pumps draw water at massive flow rates. Without an ASIB-approved vortex inhibitor, a whirlpool (vortex) can form at the outlet, drawing air into the pumps. This causes “cavitation,” which can destroy the pump or cause a catastrophic drop in water pressure precisely when the sprinklers need it.
